Enzymes for sustainable PFAS degradation
VitroZymes ApS is a Danish biotech company developing innovative enzyme-based solutions to degrade PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) and enable their use in industrial processes. The company focuses on advanced enzyme technology to make industrial processes more efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective.
PFAS - A persistent problem
PFAS are a large group of man-made chemicals used for decades because of their resistance to heat, water, grease, and chemicals. They are found in a wide range of everyday products and industrial applications, including non-stick cookware, water- and stain-resistant textiles, food packaging, and firefighting foams.
What makes PFAS particularly concerning is their extraordinary persistence. Many PFAS do not readily break down in nature, allowing them to accumulate in soil, water, wildlife, and, in some cases, humans. This is why PFAS are often called “forever chemicals.”
PFAS contamination is now found in ecosystems and water sources worldwide. As awareness of their environmental and potential health impacts grows, there is an urgent need not only to prevent further contamination, but also to find effective ways to remove and ultimately destroy these persistent compounds.
A biological approach to PFAS degradation
By combining computational research with advanced enzyme engineering, we aim to create a new biological approach to PFAS degradation. Instead of simply capturing or transferring PFAS from one place to another, we aim to develop enzymes that can break these highly persistent molecules down.
Our approach brings together biology, computational design, and protein engineering to explore what is possible in the fight against PFAS—and to move toward more sustainable solutions for a persistent global problem.
Breaking the Unbreakable
PFAS are human-made chemical compounds and among the most persistent known substances.
VitroZymes is developing enzymes that can break down these persistent compounds, combining computational research and enzyme engineering to create a new biological approach to PFAS degradation.
Meet the team behind the Science!
The team comprises researchers with strong technical backgrounds and recently completed Master’s degrees who have worked together at VitroZymes since 2024. Our clear division of roles enables each team member to contribute their expertise while collaborating closely across disciplines.
As a young, growing company, we are also building expertise beyond the laboratory. we are actively developing capabilities in business development, sales, and commercialization, supported by an experienced advisory board with expertise spanning business development, the water sector, and the life sciences.
We believe that solving complex environmental challenges requires more than a single discipline. By combining scientific expertise, computational research, enzyme engineering, and an ambition to build a strong business, we are working to turn new biological solutions into real-world impact.
